Call for Volunteers

The Hertie School has the honor to host this year’s German National Round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Berlin from 1 to 4 March 2023. We are already working with all our efforts on this event, which will hopefully be a great experience for all teams, coaches and judges. Yet the Jessup competition could not be possible without the dedicated work of volunteers.

The Hertie School is currently looking for volunteers that may assist the Jessup Competition in Germany and serve as bailiffs. We are calling for Jessup alumni, supporters and or members of the mooting community to support us in making the 2023 Jessup in Berlin a wonderful experience for everyone.

As a bailiff you would be key to a smooth and successful round of pleadings. Your main responsibility is to make sure the courtroom is running on schedule and procedures are followed. Other important responsibilities include setting up courtrooms, meeting with teams and judges, distributing score-sheets, and observing that rounds are conducted fairly. This is a great opportunity to get in touch with the Jessup community, even if your university did not register a team to compete in the competition. It might even be a great opportunity to convince friends and colleagues to join the competition in the future.

As a bailiff, you will not only have the chance to support an amazing competition but also to network with students and esteemed practitioners of international law, to witness how international legal arguments are crafted and deliberated, and gain more insides on the competition itself. You will also be able to participate at our social events on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, meet the teams, sponsors, judges and even enjoy a great party on Saturday evening.

Given the important role of bailiffs in the competition, we expect you to take your role seriously. You will be asked to serve as bailiff in two to four rounds of the competition (each lasting 90 min). We will also provide you with a short introductory seminar before the competition (1h ca.), to be held via zoom. All preparational competition materials will be provided by ILSA and the Hertie School.

As we highly appreciate your availability to help with the organization of the Jessup Competition, your participation in all events on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of the German National Round is free of charge. You will only be responsible for covering your travel and accommodation costs, should you not be based in Berlin. If you are interested in supporting the Jessup, please contact the National Administrator team at jessup.gnr@hertie-school.org until 20 February 2023 (the sooner you signal your interest to us, the better.)
